The bridge city, El Obeid

One future is dark: El Fasher repeated. A long siege, the collapse of protection, and eventually the victory of armed forces already soaked in violence. SAF and RSF, government and rebels, both carrying the alphabet of war. In this worst scenario, El Obeid becomes another name for displacement, ethnic targeting, rape as a weapon of war, famine and mass killing.
A second future is frozen: the city remains trapped on the bridge, with neither side truly winning. That too is a disaster in slow motion. Chronic malnutrition, disease, trauma, broken schools, shattered families, and young people absorbed into violent armed networks. There may be local agreements, fragile ceasefires, brief openings for aid, but still the community of El Obeid suffers.
And then there is the third future: the hopeful one. El Obeid survives and returns to its original role as a bridge between Kordofan, Darfur, central Sudan and the Sahel. Gum arabic trade rises again. Livestock, agriculture, solar energy and local markets return. For this, there must be a ceasefire, restraint and wisdom from the fighting parties.
I truly wonder whether this future can happen. But if it does, one city may yet remain standing, not as a battlefield, but as a bridge.
