Homeless in the Netherlands in the winter

During cold snowy days

I have seen for many years

People in police custody

For minor offences

As to avoid the streets

Many of them are one of the official 33,000 homeless people

Perhaps the number is double

Yes we have shelters when the temperature drops

Below 0 degrees

And when it is above 0

The streets are open and the shelter closes

Respect for the many organisation like

Salvation Army that attempt to help

People out of job, out of luck, with addiction

Or psychiatric issues and out of a home

It seems the crunch on the housing market

Affects more and more people

Is it a lack of urgency, or a confident political choice?

Does our Dutch society care less?
