37, 38, 39°C

The Netherlands is melting. Code Red. Schools are closing. Court hearings are postponed. People are being advised to stay indoors and do as little as possible.
Having worked in Sudan, where temperatures reached 55°C in the shade, I know what extreme heat feels like. Yes, today was exceptionally hot for the Netherlands, and perhaps that is exactly the point. It isn’t just the temperature itself. It’s what it means for a country that historically wasn’t built for this kind of heat.
For those who still believe climate change is a hoax, I hope you enjoy your air conditioning and your swimming pool.
And for those who think we can solve the planet’s problems while continuing business as usual, perhaps it’s time to reconsider. Our impact on the Earth is immense. Maybe the future isn’t endless green growth, but learning to live well with a smaller footprint.
Hot is hot. Whether it’s 38°C in the Netherlands or 55°C in Sudan, heat changes lives, economies, ecosystems, and health.
Take care of yourselves tonight. Stay cool, check in on your neighbours, drink enough water, and may your bedroom become just cool enough for a good night’s sleep.
