IAFS 2026

Today we are approaching something special: IAFS, the International Association of Forensic Sciences conference. Three worlds are coming together here. Forensics of the Balkans, Forensic Radiology Worldwide, and Forensic Science Worldwide converge into one gathering of minds, ideas, and stories.
For me, this marks a first. It is my first international conference in the field of forensic sciences, and I suspect it will certainly not be the last.
Today we have the pleasure of being in Sofia, Bulgaria, at the National Palace of Culture, standing right in the heart of the city itself. The program is overflowing with remarkable people who will be sharing their knowledge, wisdom, research, and experiences.
My own hope during these coming days is to speak with several of these colleagues from different countries and backgrounds. I want to learn how forensic medicine is practiced elsewhere, how people think, where innovation is emerging, and what stories live behind the science.
We live in an era of AI, rapid change, and deep storytelling. I increasingly feel that we can learn enormously from one another across borders. Perhaps we can take some of these sparks, these tiny forensic fireflies of innovation, back home to the Netherlands and see whether they can enrich our already strong protocols, excellent training systems, dedicated professionals, and wonderful colleagues.
On that note, greetings to all of you.
I shall be blogging from Sofia over the coming days. I am genuinely excited and hope to share beautiful images, impressions, conversations, and perhaps a few inspiring interviews with people working in the profession I chose and continue to love: forensic medicine.
